I-81 Viaduct Project Contracts
NYSDOT continues to move forward with preparations for the start of the I-81 Viaduct project. Here you will find contract and phasing information as the project advances. While procedural in nature, this information is important to continue towards advancing this project to groundbreaking in 2022.
I-81 Viaduct Project - Phase 1, Contract 1
Contract 1 is the first of eight contracts in the $2.25 billion project. The design-build contract focuses on constructing the northern interchange of Business Loop 81 (BL 81) and Interstate 81 (I-81) and reconstructing the new section of I-81 (former I-481) between Kirkville Road and the New York State Thruway (I-90).
The I-81 Viaduct Project Contract 1 will reconstruct the section of I-81 at the interchange of I-481 to BL 81 and convert I-481 to the new I-81 between Kirkville Road and the northern I-81/I-481 Interchange.
I-81 Viaduct Project - Phase 1, Contract 2
Contract 2 is the second of eight projects in the in the $2.25 billion project. The design-build contract focuses on constructing the southern interchange of Business Loop 81 (BL 81) and Interstate 81 (I-81), modifying the new I-81 (former I-481) interchange with State Routes 5 and 92 in DeWitt (Exit 3) and expanding the corridor between I-690 and Kirkville Road (Exit 5).
I-81 Viaduct Project - Phase 1, Contract 3
Contract 3 is the third of eight projects in the in the $2.25 billion project. The design-bid-build contract focuses on constructing new on and off-ramps to North Clinton Street from the future Business Loop 81 (existing I-81) and a new bridge that will connect Bear Street to future Business Loop 81 northbound. The contract also reconstructs the bridges at Bear, Court and Spencer Streets to accommodate the expanded future Business Loop 81.
I-81 Viaduct Project - Phase 1, Contract 4
Contract 4 is the fourth of eight projects in the in the $2.25 billion project. The design-bid-build contract focuses on creating a new gateway to University Hill. The buildout of the community grid starts here, helping to relieve traffic backups in the City of Syracuse by constructing a new I-690 interchange at Crouse Avenue. Crouse and Irving Avenues will also be expanded to support three lanes, carrying two-way traffic, and Irving Avenue will be extended from East Fayette Street to Erie Boulevard East.
