About the Project Overview
The New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration are leading the environmental review process for the Rehabilitation or Replacement of five Cross Bronx Expressway Bridges (on Interstate 95). Read about the project’s purpose, objectives and needs.
The Cross Bronx Expressway (CBE) is a critical east-west route that extends from the George Washington Bridge to the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges. With daily traffic reaching 150,000 vehicles in certain locations, the CBE is one of the most heavily traveled roads in the New York City metropolitan area and in the nation, carrying commuters, commercial vehicles, and recreational traffic through the South Bronx. The Cross Bronx Expressway, also known as Interstate 95, is a critical freight corridor for the northeast region and key to moving goods throughout the city.
This rehabilitation and replacement project, which will take place along a one-mile-long section between Boston Road and Rosedale Avenue, will upgrade the structures to modern standards, enhancing safety and easing travel along the highway. The project also provides opportunities for pedestrian, bicyclist and transit connectivity along the corridor.
Separately, a study to Reimagine the Cross Bronx was completed in Winter 2025 and is independent from NYSDOT’s efforts to reconstruct the five bridges. The five bridges project is foundational to any future enhancements along the corridor that may occur as a result of the study.
